Text message alerts

Bidders registered with A. N. Abell Auction Co. may choose to receive text messages about lots they have bid on or saved. It is entirely optional. Bidding works exactly the same without it.

How a bidder opts in

There is one opt-in path. It is on our own website at bid.abell.com, and it is not behind a paywall.

  1. The visitor opens bid.abell.com and presses Register to Bid.
  2. They complete the registration form: name, email address, postal address, and — optionally — a mobile number for text alerts.
  3. Beneath the mobile number is a separate consent box. It is empty by default and the visitor must tick it themselves. It reads exactly:

  4. They submit the registration. If the box was not ticked, no mobile number is stored for messaging and only email is used.
  5. The same control appears on the bidder's own My Account page, so consent can be given or taken away at any time after registering.

Consent to text messages is a separate control. It is never bundled into acceptance of the Conditions of Sale, and a bidder who declines it is registered and able to bid exactly as anybody else.

These are the only kinds of message sent to a bidder's mobile number.

Telephone bidding — the answer to a request the bidder made

Stopping text messages does not affect a bidder's ability to bid. They continue to receive the same information by email.

Your mobile number

We do not sell, rent, or share mobile numbers with third parties. Numbers given for auction alerts are used only to send those alerts. This is set out in our Privacy Policy.
